Understanding Your Owens Corning Roof Warranty
A roof warranty isn't one thing — it's two, from two different companies, covering two different failure modes. Here's how to keep both of them intact.
Two different warranties, two different promises
When people say a roof is 'under warranty,' they're usually thinking of a single blanket promise. In practice there are two separate warranties, and knowing which one applies to a given problem matters. The manufacturer warranty comes from Owens Corning and covers defects in the materials themselves — a shingle that fails because of how it was made, not how it was installed. It survives even if the installing contractor is no longer around, and it's typically registered after installation rather than automatic.
The workmanship warranty covers something different: how the roof was actually put on. It comes from us directly, runs 10 years on every system we install, and in practice is the one that matters most day to day, since the majority of roof problems trace back to installation details rather than defective material. See Warranties for our specific terms.
How registration generally works
Manufacturer warranties on shingle systems are typically registered after installation is complete, using information about the products installed, the installation date and the property. Registration requirements and exact coverage terms vary by product line and can change, so the manufacturer's own documentation — not a summary page like this one — is the final word on your specific coverage. The strongest system-level coverage from Owens Corning generally applies when a full system of matched components (underlayment, starter strip, field shingles, ridge and ventilation) is installed together by an installer who meets the manufacturer's system requirements, rather than mixed with substituted parts.
What can void manufacturer coverage
- Roofing over an existing layer instead of tearing off to the deck.
- Mixing components — using a different brand's underlayment, starter or ridge product on one layer of an otherwise matched system.
- Inadequate ventilation, which overheats the attic and shortens shingle life from underneath in a way manufacturers specifically exclude.
- Unregistered installations, if the applicable warranty requires registration within a set window after installation.
- Later penetrations by someone else — a satellite dish, an HVAC unit, a solar mount — installed without proper flashing.
What can void our workmanship warranty
Our workmanship warranty covers leaks and failures caused by installation error on our part. It doesn't cover damage from later storms, from other contractors working on the roof afterward, or from a lack of basic maintenance like clearing debris and keeping gutters flowing. Keeping your paperwork and any inspection reports helps if a warranty question ever comes up.
Where to go for exact terms
This page explains warranties in general terms on purpose — exact coverage periods and conditions depend on the specific product line installed on your roof and are set by Owens Corning's own documentation, not by us. For our own workmanship terms, see Warranties, or ask during your free inspection and we'll walk through exactly what would apply to your roof.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to do anything to activate my manufacturer warranty?
Typically yes — manufacturer warranties are generally registered after installation using details about your roof and installation date. We can tell you what's needed for your specific system.
Does a workmanship warranty transfer if I sell my house?
Ask us directly about your specific situation and documentation when the time comes; terms can vary by warranty type.
What's the single biggest cause of voided warranties?
Roofing over an existing layer instead of tearing off to the deck. It's faster and cheaper up front, and it's also the fastest way to void most manufacturer coverage outright.
