Frequently Asked Roofing Questions

The questions we hear most, answered directly. If your specific question isn't here, our glossary covers terminology and a phone call covers everything else.

How this page is organized

These are grouped loosely by topic — general roofing, materials, process and scheduling, then insurance and warranty — but every question below stands on its own, so feel free to jump to whatever's relevant. For deeper detail on any topic, check Roofing Guides, Insurance Claim Resources or the warranty guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need a repair or a full replacement?

It depends on how isolated the damage is and how much service life the roof has left. A single damaged area on an otherwise sound roof is usually a repair. Widespread granule loss, multiple leak points, or damage to the decking underneath usually point toward replacement. A free inspection will give you a straight answer either way.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most residential replacements in the Houston area are completed in one to two days, weather permitting. Steeper roofs, tile roofs and larger commercial low-slope systems take longer, and we give you a written schedule before work starts.

Do you tear off the old roof or install over it?

We tear off to the deck. Installing new shingles over an existing layer is faster and cheaper, but it hides the condition of the decking underneath and voids most manufacturer warranties outright.

What roofing materials do you install?

We install Owens Corning roofing systems, including Duration shingles with SureNail Technology, RhinoRoof underlayment and VentSure ridge ventilation, matched to the roof and the homeowner's preferences.

Do you offer free inspections?

Yes, always. See Free Roof Inspection for what's covered and how to prepare.

How much does a new roof cost?

It depends on the size of the roof, the pitch, the materials chosen and any decking repair needed. Rather than guess, use our roof cost calculator, which measures your roof from aerial imagery and gives you a real number.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We're licensed, bonded and insured, carrying $5,000,000 in liability coverage as well as workers' compensation for our crews.

Do you use aerial measurement instead of climbing every roof for a quote?

For the initial estimate, yes — we use Nearmap aerial imagery to measure accurately without needing to be on-site first. A physical inspection still happens before any contract is signed.

What is AccuLynx and why does it matter to me?

It's the job management system we schedule projects through. It's an internal tool, but it's part of why scheduling and communication stay organized instead of falling through the cracks.

Will my insurance cover storm damage to my roof?

Usually, if the damage is sudden and storm-related — hail bruising, wind-lifted shingles, storm debris impact. General wear and tear, deferred maintenance and manufacturing defects typically aren't covered. See Insurance Claim Resources for more detail.

Can you help me with my insurance claim?

We provide inspection documentation and meet the adjuster on the roof to make sure what they measure matches what's actually there. The policyholder files the claim; we support the process rather than filing on your behalf.

Is it legal for a contractor to cover my deductible?

No. It's against Texas law for a contractor to waive, absorb or rebate your insurance deductible. Any contractor offering to do so is telling you something important about how they operate.

What is a supplement in an insurance claim?

It's an additional request to your carrier when the original approved scope misses something genuinely needed — decking, flashing, code-required upgrades. It's a routine, normal part of many claims, not a confrontational one.

Do you offer financing?

Financing options are available through our finance partner. See Financing for details.

What warranty comes with a new roof?

Every system we install carries a 10-year Americo workmanship warranty in addition to the manufacturer's own materials warranty. See the Owens Corning Warranty Guide for how the two differ.

What voids a roof warranty?

Common causes include roofing over an existing layer, mixing manufacturer components with non-approved substitutes, inadequate attic ventilation, and later work by another contractor that penetrates the roof without proper flashing. Full detail is in the warranty guide.

How often should I have my roof inspected?

Once a year as routine maintenance is reasonable for most roofs, plus an inspection after any significant hail or wind event, even if the roof looks fine from the ground.

What causes the black streaks on my roof?

Those streaks are typically a type of algae (Gloeocapsa magma) rather than dirt, and they're common in Houston's humidity. They're mostly a cosmetic and longevity issue rather than a structural one, though heavy growth can shorten shingle life over time.

Why is attic ventilation such a big deal in Houston?

Poor ventilation traps heat and moisture under the roof deck, which cooks shingles from underneath and shortens their service life. In Houston's climate, that effect is more pronounced than in cooler, drier regions, which is why manufacturers take ventilation seriously when honoring a warranty.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

Yes, including low-slope systems like TPO, modified bitumen and built-up roofing, steep-slope commercial buildings, and ongoing maintenance programs. See Commercial Roofing Resources.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof?

Permit requirements vary by city and can change, so we recommend confirming current requirements with your municipality. Your roofing contractor should handle the required paperwork once requirements are confirmed.

What should I do if I have an active roof leak right now?

Contain what water you can indoors, avoid walking on a wet or damaged roof yourself, and call us. Active leaks are treated as a priority rather than a routine scheduling slot.

Can gutters actually affect my roof?

Yes. Clogged or poorly pitched gutters can back water up under the roof edge and contribute to fascia and decking damage over time, so gutter condition is part of a full roof inspection, not a separate concern.

What's the difference between a manufacturer warranty and a workmanship warranty?

A manufacturer warranty covers defects in the materials themselves and comes from Owens Corning, independent of who installed the roof. A workmanship warranty covers how the roof was installed and comes from us directly. Our workmanship warranty runs 10 years on every system we install.

Do you offer maintenance programs for commercial roofs?

Yes. Scheduled inspections and minor repairs on a maintenance program tend to catch small issues — ponding water, seam separation, flashing wear — before they become a larger, more disruptive repair.

What should I do before selling a house with an older roof?

Get it inspected before you list. Knowing the roof's actual condition lets you decide whether to address anything proactively or price and disclose accordingly, rather than being surprised by a buyer's inspection report.

What should I ask a roofer before hiring them?

Ask for their workmanship warranty length in writing, which manufacturer warranty will be registered on your roof, what would void it, and whether they tear off to the deck. A straightforward answer to all four is a good sign.

Do you serve areas near the coast or Galveston Bay?

Yes. Coastal and bay-area neighborhoods face higher wind exposure, and some Texas coastal counties fall under separate windstorm insurance rules through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. We can walk through what that means for your specific property.

How do I prepare my home before an inspection or installation?

Clear vehicles from the driveway, secure or move anything fragile in the attic or on patios below the roofline, and let us know about pets. See Free Roof Inspection for a full list.

What happens to my landscaping and gutters during a roof replacement?

We take reasonable precautions to protect landscaping and gutters during tear-off and installation, and we do a cleanup and magnet sweep of the property afterward to catch stray nails and debris.

Can I finance my roof without going through insurance?

Yes. Whether or not there's an insurance claim involved, financing options are available through our finance partner for out-of-pocket projects. See Financing.

Want the number before anyone visits?

Type your address and we'll measure the roof from aerial imagery — area, pitch and every facet — then price it at our published rate per square. About fifteen seconds, and we don't need your phone number to show you the number.
